Post Planting Care Instructions
We would like to thank you for your business. Following the installation of
any plant material, proper maintenance is very important to ensure the successful growth and development of your new investment.
Watering
A consist ant watering schedule should be
maintained for at least the first six months. The most common cause of death in new plantings is generally improper watering. Watering thoroughly every 7-10 days should be adequate. Keep
in mind this timetable can vary due to weather conditions, type of soil, and exposure to sun or shade. Mechanical moisture meters are available,
however, the most accurate tool is your hand. When in doubt, simply stick your fingers into the soil around the root ball to about a depth of 3-4 inches. If the plant feels dry, water thoroughly
Effective Manual Watering is best achieved by turning the flow from
your hose down to a slow trickle and placing it at the base of each plant for several minutes. Length of watering time will very according to the
size of your plant. For example, a three gallon size pant may need only 2-5 minutes of watering whereas a 15 gallon plant may need 10 minutes or more.
An existing irrigation system should be monitored to be sure that your new plants are receiving
adequate coverage. In the case of drip irrigation, additional emitters may need to be installed around the base of your new plants.
We highly recommend that you purchase a rain gauge and mount it in an open area away from
the canopy of trees. This enables you to have an accurate idea as to the amount of rainfall your plants are receiving
Fertilization
It is important to fertilize your trees and shrubs at least twice per year. Early Spring, just before growth starts, and Early Fall. In our area March
is a good time to give your plants their first feeding. This will give them enough energy to flower heave and produce healthy leaves and roots. The
same should be done in early September and no later than October, giving your plants enough energy to get through the winter ahead and keep them from slitting if we have a deep freeze.
Mulching
Mulching around your plants helps to insulate the roots from the effect of adverse weather conditions. In our sometimes dry summers a good covering of mulch (approx. 3-4 inches) will
help to conserve precious moisture your trees and shrubs need. Mulch will reduce the ability of weeds to grow in your planting beds as well. Be careful not to pile mulch too deeply against the
base of your plant reducing the air supply to the root system, this can be detrimental to the life of your plant.
